Interesting piece

An old colleague of mine, Keith Ammann, wrote this opinion piece using the prejudice against pit bulls to illustrate the faulty logic in the prejudice against Muslims.

I make a special guest appearance (hint: I'm the one who trains the pit bulls). I didn't know what the piece was going to be about when he was asking me questions about my experience working with dogs, and I definitely was intrigued when I realized it wasn't going to be your garden-variety story about BSL!

It's provocative and interesting, and I know not everyone's going to love it or approve of it, but I think it's a good read.

Undercover cops fought pit bulls to make bust

Someone sent me a link to this story today about the huge Missouri dog-fighting bust that took place last year.

The headline: Huge Dogfighting Bust Went Down Only After Cops Brought Their Pit Bulls to the Fight

The gist of it: Undercover cops bought and trained pit bulls to bring to dog fights. The actually entered the dogs in fights so they could get the dirt on the dog fighters.

A quote from the story:

Though the investigators began by arranging dogfights in Missouri and southern Illinois, by January 2009, they found themselves "hooked" for matches as far from home as Oklahoma and Texas. By their own tally, they eventually made more than 150 undercover contacts and attended 86 dogfights.

"We ended up being involved and going to fights way more than a real fighter would," Mills says. "Most only did two or three, and some of them only did one or two a year, because it's so intense in the training process."

The story doesn't mention what ultimately happened to the dogs the investigators fought. I wonder where they are today.
